Osteopathy for Dancers

By Antonino Balistreri

Dancers use their body continuously. The constant training and work make them vulnerable from possible injuries and fatigue.

I used to be a dancer myself for almost ten years (in one of my previous lives :)). Teaching in gyms and studios, training for my routines and competitions was quite demanding and challenging.

For that reason I used to get massage treatments. Having periodic treatment of deep tissue techniques and applied positional release techniques helped me a lot in keeping my body in a state of wellness and injury free.

You don’t need to have treatments because you suffer from an injury or trauma or a condition. Preventive treatments are very useful for those people who “ask a lot” from their body.

Now I don’t dance anymore, professionally. However I do treat dancers. I work in Covent Garden where there is the biggest concentration of theaters in London. Sooner or later someone would have walked my door.

When I treat a dancer I always ask what kind of dance he or she performs. Different styles can mean different needs and different osteopathic approach techniques. I may use a different approach according if the dancer perform flamenco, tango, breakdance or valtzer.

In my long career of dancer I had the possibility to learn the basics of different styles so when it comes to treat a dancer I may guess how his or her body has been worked out.
